Gallery

I chose the art work by
Joe Blumb (Photomedia)
Questions being asked in his Research:
What can we learn about our culture form the buildings on a midwestern main street?
How does the appearence and function of a building evolve over decades?
Can we appreciate the hahazard beauty of humble commercial buildings?
How do sun, weather, time , and renovations combine to sculpt a buildings facade?
Locations: St. Marys KS/Hutchinson KS/Eudora KS/Starsburg MO

The interesting aspect of this art work is the composition of the photos, Four photos- four square buildings that ultimately make a square on the gallery wall. Each one of these buildings has a similarity to another with the blue sky, old windows and timeless glow.

The questions the artist asked were a big part of why I chose this piece. Coming from a small town filled with timeless buildings these art work spoke to me in a soft way. Most people do not see the beauty and bones of the abandon buildings of these almost abandon old towns. These structures have stood through wars and celebrations, birthdays and deaths. All serving a different purpose for a different situation, and the outside is just the surface of what the buildings have gone through.

For me specifically being an Interior Design major the questions of space, weather, and time are interesting and make me question what that all means for the original intended design and what came out of it.

As a relation to what we have been learning in class, presentation is key and how it all collaborates together, with squares and structure being relevant in this piece and the four elements making one. Also another point is that design is everywhere around you, even the older parts of society were design and thought out at one point; with time comes change and some designs conform and other are dismissed.

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”

The reason I want to pursue a career in Interior Design is because I love the collaboration of  visuals and space, everyday we are surrounded by visuals and they continually effect the way we feel and react to the world. I was specifically influenced by my parents both being artists and being in the art world my whole entire life. So it was a given I was to do something in the arts! I would consider myself an artist since I have had shows in Wichita, doing mixed media work and paintings. So for me it was finding a job I would love and being able to make money doing it. I am intending to get my degree in Interior Design and work for an Architect firm doing commercial design. One thing that has also influenced me is the "Interior Design" magazine that I search through each month I get it and more and more it makes me want to be out in the work force making the visual world a little more beautiful, functional, and meaningful.

Understanding Comics

While viewing the readings this evening I picked up on a few points and wanted to share them:
-ICON- any image used to represent a person place things or idea.
-Words are abstract icons
-Cartooning is a way of seeing
-We as humans are self centered race as we see ourselves in everything.
-One set of lines to see. Another set of lines to be.
-Pictures are received information.
-Writing is perceived information.
-You bring the meaning to the icon.
-Art does not reproduce the visible; rather. it makes visible.
-All lines carry with them an expressive potential.
-What you get it what you give.

For our new design project we have to pick five hand tools and start drawing sketches of them, Over all the last project went well, I had a really good group that stuck it out. Everything that could have gone wrong did but we got it done and did our best with the circumstances. I am hoping for this next project there will be enough time to refine all the details and be able to produce the most thought out assignment. Also great job everyone in my Think and Make class!!!!!

Hopefully we will finish our project today! We are meeting back in the design building to put finishing touches on things.

In the IDEO video, I learned that it is essential for designers to constantly ask the questions of who, what, when, where, how,and why. As for the hand out, you have to break down every aspect of your object to the last detail, by doing this you will come up with the finest and most user friendly design. You have to break it down in a way the consumer wouldn't think about it and then by doing that you will come up with those "Pleasant Designs".
